Below is a listing of colorful shrubs that we incorporate into the landscape designs developed for our customers.  These shrubs are selected for zone 7 of the southeast.  Many plants will perform well in other zones as well.  Colorful shrubs are used to provide year round or seasonal color in the landscape.  Many can be planted in mass or as specimen focal points.

Knockout Rose

 

 

Moonbay Nandina

The Moon Bay Nandina is an excellent landscape plant that matures at about 2 feet tall.  The winter color is red and the summer color is a lighter green than other Nandinas.  The leaves are also slightly smaller than other Nandinas.














 

Golden Mops Thread Branch Cypress Pom Pom’s

Bright yellow, threadlike new foliage matures green, with some juvenile foliage remaining.  Gold mops form a dwarf, mounding bun to 5 – 6 feet tall by 4 to 6 feet wide.  Excellent mop-headed accent plant that makes nice background border or small hedge. Evergreen. Full sun.

Gold Mound Spirea

mall deciduous shrub grows 2 to 3 feet high and 3 to 5 feet wide. Has soft, small leaves that are yellow to dark green, depending on the variety. Small white to deep pink flowers bloom during the summer months. must be grown in full sun. Popular Atlanta species include: Anthony Waterer Spirea, Bumald Spirea, Dolchica, Gold Flame Spirea , and Gold Mound Spirea.

Golden Mops Thread Leaf Cypress 

The smallest of the gold mops is a 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide uniquely textured shrub that resembles a mop.  The yellow color is brightest in full sun and greener in shadier locations.  The gold mop is a great accent plant.  It is an excellent plant for rock gardens and slope plantings. 

Chamaecyparis Obtusa

The common name is Hinoki False Cypress.  This distinctive oriental style evergreen tree which comes in many varieties and sizes. This is an excellent specimen plant.  It is great for rock gardens.  The dark green foliage with yellow tips of The Nana Gracilis is particularly attractive.  Does best in full sun in a moist, well drained soil and a moderately humid environment.  It does not like drying winds.

Nana

One of the smallest forms of Hinoki Cypress.  Nana is very slow growing to about 3 feet in height and slightly wider.  

Nana Gracillis

Nana Gracilis is the most popular dwarf Hinoki.  It is irregularly globose developing an upright habit as it matures to a height of 6 feet.  It grows 3 to 6 inches per year.  Nana Gracilis has dark green, compact foliage.













Verdoni 

Verdoni is a yellow version of Hinoki Cypress.  It grows to five feet tall.  Verdoni grows in full sun to partial shade.  It grows 3 to 6 inches per year.



Cryptomeria Globosa Nana

This is the best of the mounding cryptomerias with rich green branches and unique fur-like texture. Never needs pruning to keep its compact form.   It grows 3 to 5 feet tall and wide.  Plant in full sun or partial shade.

 

GULFSTREAM Nandina

The Gulf Stream Nandina is similar to the Moon Bay Nandina with slightly flatter and larger leaves.  Mature height is taller at 2 ½ to 3 ½ feet tall.  Summer leaves are green with orange tints.  Winter leaves are reddish.













 

Dwarf Burning Bush

Famous for its beautiful red fall color.  This grows 5-10' high and wide.  It is used for hedging and mass plantings. 









 

Rosa Glow Barberry

The most common barberry cultivars have purple leaves.  An excellent summer or fall shrub for purple foliage.  For best leaf color, plant in full sun.  It grows 3-6' high.  





 

Wichita Blue Juniper 

Wide pyramidal evergreen with striking bright silver-blue foliage. This is a good accent or screen. An excellent hedge which can be sheared. This evergreen grows up to 20' tall and 8' wide. Plant in full sun.

 

Hetzi Juniper

Hetzi is a large upright spreading juniper with distinct bluish green needles.  It grows 5-10' high and wide.

Emerald Arborvitae 

Narrow, pyramidal evergreen with dense emerald green foliage. A moderate grower to 15' tall, 3 to 4 feet wide. Plant in full sun.
